- Position during the examination: the patient lies on his back with a pillow under his head for convenience and better access to the gland.
- Gel application: a special gel is applied to the skin of the neck to improve the conductivity of ultrasound waves.
- Scanning: the doctor moves the sensor over the surface of the neck, obtaining an image of the thyroid gland on the device screen.
- Completion of the procedure: after the scan is complete, the gel is wiped off and the patient can return to normal activities.
How to prepare for a thyroid ultrasound?
No special preparation is required. It is recommended to avoid intense physical exertion a few days before the examination. In some cases, especially in the elderly and children, it is recommended to perform an ultrasound on an empty stomach to avoid a possible gag reflex during pressure on the neck by the probe.
